Last year was Team Annie's first year participating in the Hope Walk. The turn out was overwhelming. I'm hoping this year will be just as BIG! We walk to remember my mom. She was a friend, a sister, a wife and a mother. I'd like to take this day to honor her memory. Just one day, when friends and family can get together to remember the person she was before and after her diagnosis. She was strong and loving and was dealt an unbearable hand, but at the end of the day could somehow find a way to smile. I'll never be able to understand how she dealt with it all or tell her how incredible she was. This is my way of showing her, of giving back. I know she'll be walking with us again this year.
Huntington’s disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure.
HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of carrying the faulty gene. Today, there are 30,000 symptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease. I am one of those "at-risk". I've seen first hand what HD can do to a person and HDSA needs all the support they can get.
