Welcome to the SGWS team homepage! Please join me and my wonderful colleagues from Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, along with special support from Tito's Handmade Vodka and Fever-Tree, as we gather to support the HD community and celebrate the life of our dear friend and brother-in-law, Paul Kelly.
This year will mark 5 years since Paul ended his battle with Huntington's Disease at the young age of 32. Although Paul encountered many challenges at the hands of HD, we continue to be inspired by his endless optimism, his mind-over-matter attitude, and his overall goofiness and sense of humor. Not once did I hear Paul complain about his condition!
Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure. HD is often described as having ALS, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's all at once.
HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of carrying the faulty gene. Today, there are 30,000 symptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease.
The Huntington’s Disease Society of America is the premier nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of everyone affected by HD. From community services and education to advocacy and research, HDSA is the world’s leader in providing help for today and hope for tomorrow for people with HD and their families.
