This is my first Team Hope 5k and I'm excited about being a part of it. This cause means so much to me. I'm not even sure where to begin and I'm sure I will add to this story as the walk/run gets closer.
My Dad died 7 years ago after a long battle with HD. For those of you who do not know, here is the short ...
"Huntington’s disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure".
That short description really gives you no idea of the devastating impact that this disease has on the person or that person's family. Imagine losing your ability to think, walk, talk, and eat. It's pretty awful watching your family members go through something so terrible.
I have a 50/50 chance of that same fate. The good news is that today I am healthy and feel very blessed for the life I have. The question I have asked myself a million times over the years is 'How can I help?'. There is not currently a cure, but there have been amazing breakthroughs in the last few years. Breakthroughs that have given me hope. I am joining this walk/run to not just raise money to fund research, but to also raise awareness. I am also doing this because I think it will be pretty damn cool to be surrounded by people that care about this cause. Family members, friends, people that are just there for the snacks ... :)
If you are in the Bay Area I think you should join us on this walk! I would love to see you out there!
