Thank you for visiting our team fundraising page! We are walking to raise money and support HDSA, the premier non-profit organization dedicated to providing people with HD and their families the help for today and hope for tomorrow that they need and deserve.
As many of you know my mom was diagnosed with Huntington's Disease about 5 years ago. This disease breaks down nerve cells in the brain causing symptoms similar to ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s combined. Even though the progression of the disease has made many aspects of her daily life more difficult she continues to be a beacon of strength and joy. She is a wonderful mom and grandmother who loves her kids and her 7 grandchildren and she never passes up an opportunity to tell everyone (even complete strangers) how proud she is of them.
Since Huntington’s is genetically inherited I have a 50/50 chance of having the expanded gene that causes HD. After much consideration I chose not to be tested and thus I am considered to be “at risk” of developing it. Since there is the possibility I have the disease my three children are also at risk. Although there is the possibility that one day I might develop the symptoms of the disease I focus on enjoying each day with my children and my husband. I remind them that whatever their future holds how they live their life in the present matters and that God loves them and ultimately will provide and care for them.
Please mark your calendars and join our team on Saturday, September 22nd as we walk to make a difference. Just register and I will be in touch! You can find out more information about the walk or how you can make a donation on our personal fundraising page by clicking the ‘Donate’ button at the top of the page or visit www.hdsa.org to learn more about HD and The Huntington’s Disease Society of America.
